Agreed, as a post ep314(Mitchell) fan I like Joel just fine but early episodes had some real flat jokes. The Bots were just making simple puns early on. Mike’s time on the show imo was when the jokes and the skits were at their best and didn’t rely on awkward meandering.

Mike as far as hosts go, as I appreciate his personality with the bots, but I do appreciate the Joel-era show structure, particularly his relationship to the Mads.

I love MST3K more than Rifftrax, but there are some fantastic Rifftrax episodes. My favorite might still be Jurassic Park.

My dad introduced me to the show when I was very young via some tapes from my uncle. I was hooked right away. I remember watching some early morning airings on SciFi in my teens and when they stopped airing them, I got sad.

I remember when I started watching Steven Universe, the first time the mayor appeared I heard Joel’s voice and I was like “Wait a minute!” Now I can’t stop hearing it and thinking about Mitchell and other crappy movies when he appears.

I love MST3k, but I am a die-hard Mike fan. I’ve never really liked Joel’s sleepy-disinterested voice, and it makes his zingers land with less bite than they should. Mike as the energetic yet dopey puppy of the crew works way better, in my opinion.

Pluto also has an excellent Rifftrax channel as well. 

Back in the day, MST3K aired nightly at midnight on Comedy Central. It was perfect, because MST3K is a unique comedy in that you need minimal brain power to process it. Great for when you are half asleep after a hard day’s work.
