Mike Ramsey dreams of electric Mustangs

Am I the only one who really loves the sounds electric cars make? I love that futuristic, Jetsons-y gear whine. Honestly, I find Teslas almost too quiet - there’s so much sound insulation that you can’t hear the natural sounds of all that power being transmitted to the wheels.

Now playing

Electric motors can use any transmission you want. Most of the time, it’s just not a requirement like it is with a gas engine, but there’s no reason you can’t have an electric car with a manual. Many conversions work that way, often with spectacular results.

They did.

Smokey and the Bandit.

I kinda want to know which staff member actually wrote this, and I kinda just want to believe it really was A Chevy Malibu.

This is why I love you, Jason. We measure cars by how fast they go from 0 to 60 miles per hour, but I measure writers by how fast they go from Fiat Tempra to Fax Summoner.

That’s probably another reason why people don’t like rear-facing seats. You get to watch the car behind you get closer and closer as you slow down, and you can’t help imagining what will happen if it doesn’t stop.

Spared no expense.

I’ve been working on a near-future sci-fi short story for some time now about a world where human drivers have been deemed a safety hazard, and all cars are fitted with a fully self-aware AI. People can still drive if they want (mostly because a lot of the cars are older models that have been retrofitted with the AI),

I actually didn’t expect much, but mine is pretty good too.

That doesn’t make it any less bad.

Really? This again? I expected better from a site that’s supposedly so liberal and progressive.

I’ve got no problem with the girls, but the color grading makes me feel like I’m looking at them through some kind of awful Instagram filter.

Car and sand aside...as a filmmaker, the color grading in that clip is an abomination. (I assume the rest of the movie is the same.)

TIL there was a car called the Pontiac Torrent.

I’ve long been of the opinion that every teenager’s first car should be an early 2000s Corolla, or something similar. Cheap, boring, slow, safe, easy to drive and nobody will miss it if it gets munched.

“Don’t worry, it was a Chevy. No great loss.”

Electric Camaro? Awesome! Now move the beltline down so you can actually see out of the damn thing, and you’ve got yourself a car.

That will work in the short term, but I think you’ll quickly find yourself wishing you had one car that everyone can ride in.
