Same concept in this book. Europa's hidden ocean supports a sentient species of plant-like animal that covers the entire planet and works as one giant organism. Bascially the moon itself is alive. It's a quick read and def worth it.

Maybe the aliens wanna keep our infrastructure intact, or at least not burn everything to the ground. The Earth would be in a much more usable state with a ground assault, then it would be chucking asteroids at it until every last human is gone.

Not sure why the core losing energy is decreasing its mass, it's still putting out energy just gradually slowing down, so wouldn't it just be adding mass at a slower rate as well? Is it not the same reasoning how global warming energy increases mass?
