I can understand why people would be upset that Rick kept the secret. What if Maggie's sister had killed herself a few episodes earlier? She would have turned, much to the surprise of everyone, and would have probably ended up killing a couple people at the farm.

Agreed. And if he's looking for a way to explore the discovery of super powers, he can have Parr family (and Frozone?) open a school for supers. And this way, the sequel won't feel like a total retread, because instead of having a Fantastic Four vibe it'll be a little more like X-Men.
