Yes, some states let you take the bar without school. The laws are old. Think about how many colleges there were in 1780. Lots of lawyers apprenticed, and took the bar. Louisiana and Virginia come to mind as two that this applies.

Eh, in defense of my home state I kinda feel like if you ONLY have experience working with a lawyer and still think you can pass the bar with no law school, you will FOR SURE fail. Which seems like an adequate punishment for that kind of hubris.
