I dunno, Lance had a pretty similar public image before everyone decided to hate him. Of course, his private persona was radically different - if Peyton really is that aww shucks guy, there probably wouldn’t be the same pile-on factor if this story is somehow confirmed.

The sub-context also makes a huge difference. Lance was cheating to win, Peyton was cheating (allegedly) to come back from devastating injury. It is a much easier story to sell.
