I think some of this discussion misses the point of the salary staring contest. I have had 7 jobs in my career and have NEVER felt like I left any serious money on the table for any of them.

Do you have any idea how busy the president is? I would guess Dubbya hasn't carried a cell phone for 10 years now. Somebody just hands one to him (pre-dialed) when he needs to make a call.

@Buddha916: Very sad and very true. I've taught in universities for 8 years in 3 countries, and the story is the same: universities have become dating services for the middle classes and a way to postpone working for a few years.
