I don’t disagree with your overall point, but using those specific matches as an example is silly. If Isner and Mahut had played a three set match with a 70-68 third set, it still would have been by far the longest match in tennis history.

Soccer threw the good solution to this away a long time ago. Replay the game the next day after a regular 90 minute match is tied. I believe an early round FA Cup match once went 6 replays (over like 10 days). I would like see them use the current early round FA Cup system, where they do 1 replay and then do PKs if…

Handball’s have to be deliberate or gain an advantage. Think “kick rule” in basketball. If the guard throws a bounce off your foot it’s not a kick. If you instinctively or even accidentally kick at the ball, foul.

100 years ago they would have come back the next day and replayed it if it were tied after 90.  Still tied after 90?  Do it again the next day, rinse, repeat, until you have a have a winner.
