Going Camless would actually I think hamper the adoption of electric cars, the flexibility it provides would greatly increase the specific output (and effieceny) of a Gas Motor.

IIRC they all have other jobs for the team and just during the few minutes when the cars are actually in motion act as the pit crew.

If the engine regulations allowed for it, F1 (and as a result the rest of the automotive world) would have Camless engines or the idea would be evaluted and ruled out.

On a 2004 the Coil Pack will likely be the only issue, they tend to be a common cause of a P0300 (random miss-fire). Its an easy swap though as there is nothing in the way and only like 4 bolts.
