I think some people had a bad experience with the older NiCad batteries, and don’t know that modern NiMH batteries are pretty great now.  I don’t really know if there’s a good way to educate people about that unless there was an industry push or something

Plenty of them still on eBay. If you actually want to scan barcodes, you can get a proper barcode scanner for not much more though.
