I got this “push-pull” advice early on, and it was extremely helpful. I do super-sets where I alternate bench press with the lat pull-down machine. It has worked really well for me.

I’m not arguing against the other replies, but I want to add a “yes” to the Smith machine. I have back and neck issues, and my gym does not have a full-blown squat cage — they have racks, but not the kind with the safety stops that Beth mentions.
