EXACTLY.  many of us learn to use cognitive shortcuts where we have social intuition problems, because we CAN LEARN new skills.  most of us get better as we age because we learn to cope and adapt, because although we may be different we do have functioning brains that can learn, just like other humans.

i’m autistic and do not move easily through the world at all, yet i still don’t understand why people do this.  we’re just different, we’re not a plague to be eradicated.

as an adult with autism, it always makes me so sad to hear how many parents feel like having a child with autism is like losing your child to death.  that a child who is different is “traumatic” to their parents makes me feel like a lot of autistic kids are being abused and neglected by their “traumatised” parents.
