I’d attribute a certain amount of it to the senior’s sense of superiority to our contemporary panics. This sort of “I’ve seen it all, and nothing’s as bad as it seems” dismissal that they feel they’ve earned with age. It’s the bookend to feeling invincible in one’s youth, perhaps.
