I honestly think Ainge was waiting to sign Hayward to trade for George. From everything I’ve heard they have the capspace to sign a max guy but trading for George first would’ve killed that option. They just got unlucky and Pritchard killed it by trading George before the Celtics had the chance

In order for the deal to fit under the cap, Ainge needed to sign Target Free Agent (Primary Target - Gordon Hayward) THEN trade for George. That said, given George’s hots for LA, I was never all that thrilled with the prospect of dealing much of value (certainly NOT the Nets or Lakers picks) for 1 year of George.
