Honestly, I totally believed her right after I watched it. I only started to doubt it when I thought about how, if she really did see her children again, she would not want to leave them, no matter how much she loved Kevin. I think the magic of the scene is that Nora both believes it and doesn’t believe it at the same

Totally right about Austin. Houston is getting up there too, and Dallas gets the same rep in the DFW metro area (I grew up there). Now that I live in Philadelphia, I’ve learned that I and my fellow city-dwellers are similarly branded literally anywhere else in the state of Pennsylvania.

Cornyn is exactly what red Texas voters want, and their consensus on him is pretty much unanimous, whereas with Cruz it is not. The demographic landscape of Texas is probably more liberal than district lines will tell you, but despite that, Beto will lose if he runs against Cornyn. That being said, he’s done a great

Sure, but if you go down the “What-if” rabbit hole, no accomplishment matters. I live in Philly, I want the 76ers to win it all, and it was frustrating and heartbreaking for game 7 to end like that. But it happened, and I’m okay with it now. Crazy shit like that is what makes basketball so much fun.

But all that comes at a premium. The cost of living skyrockets to a point that almost systematically excludes certain people - namely people of color, without any stash of wealth to fall back on, that tried to make it there but couldn’t keep up when suddenly the real estate prices shot up. Then again, I’ve only seen

That’s a shame. As an immigrant myself, I’m all for immersing yourself in a new place and its culture, but showing up and forcing that place to adhere to your standard is downright destructive. And yeah, I know no one individual does this, or may even intend to, but gentrification is its own culture in a way, and for

I’ll give you that. My family usually goes for “Trini” or “West Indian”, and I assume the other nearby islands are the same. "Caribbeans" has never referred to people in my lifetime.

I mean, you can be mad about all that, and that’s fine. I grew up in Trinidad, and my family moved to to Dallas suburbs when I was still in school. Next to no one in DFW can even tell you if Trinidad is on planet Earth, so finding anyone with even a marginal connection to Trinidad is a blessing for me. I live in

Not from Brooklyn, but I was born and (mostly) raised in Trinidad. I visited Brooklyn with my family in the mid-2000s, and I swear it felt like home. It was weirdly refreshing to let our accents fly with the restaurant owners (we found doubles!). We moved to the Dallas suburbs in 2001, so we were coping with a

I saw Gritty once near City Hall over Christmas and it might be the only celebrity sighting I've ever cared about.

My interpretation of the whole thing is that we ought to work on our priorities a little if animal rights can, in some ways, supersede the rights of fellow human beings. Maybe this wasn’t the point she was getting at exactly, but some folks (usually not brown) think less of some (usually brown) humans than they do of

Not too familiar with the other two, but Bill Burr is great, so I see where you’re coming from, and I think you’re right that it can work with the right amount of self-awareness.

Yeah, I had a moment the other day when I just didn’t check the news or even browse the internet in general because any update is probably just bad news. It is exhausting, and it makes it easy to accept that this is all the new normal, but I’m still hopeful. The more things he fucks up means that there’s just more

Ironically, this unapologetic behavior is what made him popular in the first place, so maybe that’s why he’s doubling down on it? I’ve always been kind of turned off by comedians whose whole thing is to be a giant asshole. Louis CK has always been that kind of comedian, and in retrospect, it kind of seems he was

Its painful to watch.

My wife is a permanent federal employee (and she’s fucking pissed about this), but the way it goes is that you’ll get back pay when the government is eventually funded again. If you need a continuous income during that time (likely), you can apply for unemployment, since it is technically true. However, once the

What can I say? I like history, Philly has history, and Dallas doesn’t really. And work brought me and my wife here.

Thanks! I’m an amateur history nerd (my wife being the degree holding professional historian) so the city’s been great to me so far. I’ll take you up on the Brandywine museum tip, that sounds incredible!

As someone who likes history, I have to say Philly is my choice, sorry. Dallas has cheap housing and a booming job market (and Babe's, I'll definitely miss Babe's), but it doesn’t make for terribly interesting conversation.

Well I mean Philly has more going on than just football. Dallas/DFW is a little too "Ride or Die" for me when it comes to the Cowboys. Philly has a group of fans that are definitely just like that, but I'm having a better experience so far.
