“The Basics” should ALWAYS be mastered first, regardless of the skill being learned. Technology may one day make BFM obsolete, but just knowing and honing those skills will make every pilot a better one, regardless as to whether or not they use those skils in the “classic dogfighting” sense.

The argument wasn’t pertaining to the potency of air-to-air missile warheads. It was concerning the missiles themselves and the incorrect assumption that said weapons would render BFM dogfighting skills obsolete.
