Work stoppage usually costs a lot of money so I would assume the financial penalties are actually worse than just the fines. But still, potentially lethal negligent errors should generate fines at least six figures.

I'm guessing the motivation for this is about gathering data about users to feed its AI in order to improve purchase suggestions. Functionality listed in that video is kinda gimmicky otherwise. And of course they will be pushing towards ecosystem lock in.

Who said anything about Apple? As far as I remember, Palm and Blackberry did most of the heavy lifting. MS was an also-ran even back then but they sold a lot of units to the enterprise because of their integration with Exchange Server.
