I’m not a pilot. But this description sounds like a plane that is technically flyable, but not landable. No communcation or navigation or instruments and flying in a thunderstorm, so no visuals either.

The B body wagons with the clamshell tailgate. For whatever reason Oldsmobile didn't get a B body wagon until the great downsizing in 77-78 but Buick, Chevrolet and Pontiac had beasties longer than a Suburban.
The Custom Cruiser is the B-body (or C?). It has a normal roof and the clamshell tailgate. This is the A-body Vista Cruiser.

The comparison with the 747 doesn’t hold up. Boeing’s big girl was in service (relevant) for much longer, and six times as many produced.
