Sorry that you saw a bad show. I was actually prepared for mine to suck, but I was very pleasantly surprised.
I'll say this much: I just saw them on Sunday night and they killed it. They even played songs for which I didn't much like the album versions, and those sounded awesome live.
Is it weird that I want an MP3 of this song?
Then again, if every episode were an opening credits sequence, that would be amazing.
Still the greatest show of all time.
To quote Lester: I want to go to no dance unless I can… et cetera, et cetera.
Better. Call. Saul. (Edit: I mean, Simon is 100% right.)
I concur that most of the kids I met who had actually grown up in New York tended to be more open to multiculturalism. The main thing with a place like NYU is that you get a bunch of wealthy kids coming in from out-of-state—from super-white enclaves in New England or on the West Coast. And the assumption is that…
But then what happens? She gets fired from a bunch of jobs before settling on a coffee shop gig that somehow pays for a relatively nice Williamsburg pad (even after her roommate bails on her). Anyone familiar with New York prices knows that doesn't add up. Plus, that's the only time in the series (that I know of) in…
Great comment, man.
I'm a biracial dude who used to go to NYU (like, six years ago), and I definitely experienced a fair amount of racism. It's not as overt as it is down south (I've been called the n-word down south), but it's definitely there. One time, I went to a party in Brooklyn with some friends. I was the only black person there.…
I think Girls would make more sense to me as a show if they explicitly emphasized that the characters are rich. Instead, they imply that Dunham's character is an average girl from the Midwest, which feels like bullshit to me. The pervasive sense of entitlement and myopia among the characters would ring true if we knew…
Helium kicked so much ass. The song "Lucy." Just amazing.
Yeah, you're right about the Looney Tunes discs.
Thanks for sharing that very well-written and interesting anecdote. I agree that those kinds of relics (for lack of a better word) have historical value. I remember that my mom, who is black, used to have a box of "Darkie Toothpaste" in the house. As you can probably imagine—if you're not familiar with the product…
I'm biracial, and in general, I think these cartoons should be released in their original form (whether or not Cartoon Network should air them in the daytime is another matter). Mark Twain intended for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to critique American racism, so leaving that novel unabridged is a different issue…
The animation in "Coal Black" is beautifully done (because Bob Clampett directed it), but the short itself is extremely offensive and racist. And that's a bummer, too, because I'm biracial (half-black/half-white) and I appreciate awesome old-school animation. It's definitely murky when you want to appreciate an…
The ultimate Leonard Cohen album would be a mix of New Skin and Love and Hate tracks entitled, "New Skins of Love and Hate."
As much as the Vaughn pick worries me (and it does), True Detective made me a McConaughey fan, which is something I didn't expect.
