I'd get a 3DS styled like this.

I can't adapt to the 3DS by somehow having smaller hands. I might actually pick this up if only for the unique design and comfort it'll bring.

Well, I *can* say that the 360 controller is more comfortable if you have bigger hands. The PS3 controllers are fine, but I do prefer the 360 controller if I have the choice, the size of the grips fills more of my palm and the left thumbstick is in a more comfortable, neutral position.

Well I use the term 'sucker' flippantly, but my point is not that pre-orders are terrible and evil and you have to do it because GameSpot says so.

Except that's not what forcing means. Of course they're going to pitch pre-orders, it is in their interest to do so. But it does not prevent you from saying "no," you can still buy the game later.

That's funny. That looks like it could easily be the launch trailer for a Final Fantasy game I'd actually want to play. What a coincidence!

I hope that feature becomes available as DLC – I've got zero desire for a map or a keychain or a cap or whatever, but the character customization in-game sounds like fun.

That's silly. Nobody's forcing anybody to pre-order a game, if you're unsure about a game then don't pre-order it! Pre-orders are great for marketing, sure, but they also help publishers and retailers gauge demand for a game, in order to have an easier time handling manufacturing and distribution costs.
