I know, it sounds a little strange - I have Mexican family too and it sounds a little odd on the ear, but like you say - all names start somewhere.
The names Peter and Simon both mean rock. As in, a pebble or stone. Thats what I was getting at, thats all I was getting at. Tierra in that context isn't any kind of outlandish.
