Miranda's writing style is very genial: it's welcoming, it wants you to feel good, and it has a lot of soft edges. It worked for IN THE HEIGHTS, which is a slight and charming show, but HAMILTON has a subject that needs more edge and rawness than Miranda can give it.
A song between "Dear Theodosia" and "Non-Stop" called "Tomorrow There'll Be More of Us." Miranda put a script of it on his Tumblr, if you want to check it out.
The screenplay for COP OUT was also on that list.
Now now, life ain't easy for a girl named Sam.
One of my favorite political quotes, from Hubert Humphrey when he was losing his '60 presidential campaign to JFK: "They say the Humphrey campaign is disorganized - but I want you to know that the most organized thing that ever happened almost destroyed civilization."
I was going to question whether that was a standard, but… then I suddenly remembered being surprised, a few years ago, that an outdoor Christmas party in the square of my hometown was playing that song. From the original cast album, no less!
That's a great song :) I also play "Merry Almost-Christmas" every year.
That's how I feel about the score for SOMETHING ROTTEN: I actually like it more than some people, and think it's slightly more than fluff. So that helps me get beyond the more-than-abundant use of false rhymes in the score - which normally I don't mind, but it's actually worse, because see if you can catch a pattern:
"Bloody Bloody" is pretty detached and ironic, if I remember correctly, and "Hamilton" is very earnest. That's the main difference.
"Hamilton" isn't a great show: I think the subject requires a force and precision Lin-Manuel Miranda can't reach lyrically. But the music is great, and the show definitely takes its subject seriously. You should give it a listen at some point. And personally, I remember really disliking "Bloody Bloody" when I heard…
This man is gay AND European!!
I think HAMILTON has basic problems with craft.
Fun fact: Two Christmas standards were written by musical theater legends. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" was written by Frank Loesser (GUYS AND DOLLS, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS), and "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" was written by Meredith Wilson (THE MUSIC MAN).
I have problems with "Wait For It."
Man, you're damn right URINETOWN is "surprisingly dark and subversive." Go listen to the finale, "I See a River": I mean… goddamn.
What eleventy said: Do give a listen to the cast album. It's the entire show, minus one Act I scene.
