Saying they “want” to be something implies it’s a choice. I don’t think there was ill intent in the original comment, but it delegitimizes the person to say that this is just something they “want” to do, as opposed to how they actually are.

The idea is that trans people don’t want to become a different gender, rather that they are that gender, and are trapped in the body of the opposite gender.
