Yeah, if I am liable for damages caused by my stolen car, I would far prefer my car get away cleanly. The loss of the car vs so much more is an easy call. Beyond the liability, I really don’t want anyone to die because police were trying to recover my property, regardless of legal implications.

Or forcing them off the road into a gas station, causing $100k or so in damages, then handing you bill. Maybe even causing a death, and giving you a wrongful death claim to defend.

The thief can work a prison job until he covers cleanup, then he can be free. Incredibly wild that they let him walk.

I was in an accident and received a bill from the fire department for fluid cleanup. I didn’t like it, but I get it. How in the hell can they bill the owner of a stolen car? It wasn’t his fault! Maybe they billed the owner because the thief wouldn’t pay anyway.
