@the_boffin: Great addon; I like the fact you can set and forget & have it vacuum the d/b automatically X number of startups.

Not keen on that; it's a bit too in your face. I prefer PowerMeterPlus since it's only there when you need to see it. Looks nicer too :)

@Simon Cheng: From what I know a lot of the extensions are broken due to changes in the latest versions. E.g. the CallerId script I maintained for a while no longer works & requires re-coding. Just don't get the time to look at it these days.

Netvibes is brilliant; way better than iGoogle which I was finding really buggy. The big plus for me is that writing Netvibes widgets is really easy.. and once you develop it using their API you can deploy it to other platforms (including iGoogle or as a Vista desktop gadget!).

+1 for Arsclip

You could also try Screen Saver Killer which will run from the command line (useful when your network policy re-applies the screen saver settings).

Used to use it, but I now just do Firefox keyword shortcuts.

I've been using WinTidy for years; it does this small icon layout, as well as letting you save the icon positions for different screen resolutions.

I moved to Avira after PC Pro magazine recommended it; if they've extensively tested it in a lab and say it's better than AVG then that's good enough for me!

ScreenshotCaptor (free) gets my vote; being able to add annotations in the app is really useful.. plus they're not directly applied to the image & can be changed at a later date.

You could use FoxyProxy and automatically switch profiles when you start Firefox based on your current location (pinging a local server or checking your subnet) using a piece of script. I wrote a blog post a while back that covers how to achieve this.

+1 for Update Scanner

I use Spybot Search and Destroy's Tea Timer app which notifies you of any changes, and allows you to accept or deny them. It keep an eye on more than just start-up entries.

Awesome; I'm so glad to see one of my apps featured on Lifehacker! :-D Hope everyone likes it!!

Most ppl are stuck with Windows in a corporate environment, so anything they can do to make their desktop nice is welcomed :)
