I think the part about screen res is actually more of a comment about video output. (I'm no expert on the matter).

I find that, people who keep clinging to the "hardcore" or "real" gamer standard don't seem to realize that, by total hours played on a daily basis, casual gaming is a MUCH larger segment of the market than "core" gaming. It also generates a lot more revenue.
