Over time, someone recommended me to a tech publication, and that publication has a parent company that produces tons and tons of content and pays…

Do good work for a long time and wait for people to recommend you to other people. Then keep dropping your lowest-paying clients until everyone is paying you $1/word or so on projects that you can knock out quickly. It’s a slog. I’ve been doing it for ten years.
