That’s pretty cool. It’s just compared to a straight LIDAR transmitter/receiver setup, an on-board image processor that is as accurate as LIDAR I think could be prohibitive in processing resources.

I was thinking that as well but my only concern would be the speed in which you could process the images. With LIDAR it’s just a transmitter/receiver and is fairly instantaneous.

I think you could get away with a cheaper version as you propose as long as there is some sort of inter-roadway communication between vehicles within a certain range of your car.

I think it’s certainly very feasible that AVs will come about, but most likely not on the timescales that many people are pitching. There needs to be considerably more R&D in LIDAR technologies to actually drive the cost of manufacturing the devices down to a reasonable level.

I don’t think you can really get ranging data with a camera. At least not as accurately as lidar.
