Generalizing, not all convertibles have pop up roll bars. Some have fixed roll bars/hoops. Also, the Miata didn’t have any roll-over protection until the introduction of the NC in 2005. I don’t know if that qualifies as “A long time” but certainly there are cars on the road today that do not have roll bars.
