Feel free to disagree but I bet you if you searched for news stories involving the world Autopilot, 99% of them would be about Tesla. Go check, ill be here in my “bubble” waiting to hear back.

But that’s exactly the point, the public does need to be having these conversations. We can’t let this be up to the manufacturers and government alone to figure out.
That’s exactly what make Tesla work. They aren’t afraid to learn the hard way. If nobody implements this technology in the real world, how can we assess it’s progress.
I still think the word correctly represents what the system does. It allows the car to drive itself in a specific environment. It doesn’t do it perfectly so you have to pay attention while using it. Nothing Tesla has said has given any indication otherwise.
Colloquially, Tesla’s “autopilot” is probably the top use of the word Autopilot in 2018. Therefore, whatever it is that Tesla Autopilot does is what Autopilot means. You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill.
Yeah, but how will we learn from it without seeing how it works in the real world. Until autonomous cars are getting into more accidents than non-autonomous cars that argument is null and void.
Drivers have lots of reasons to not pay attention, that is exactly the point of autonomous technology. It gives them a safety net during which to do so because it is happening anyway. If they rely on it too much, surely that is their folly. It’s human nature to blame others when things go wrong and this emerging…
Yeah, I have a hard enough time letting adaptive cruise control work in my car. My brain is fighting my urge to tap the brakes when I see cars slowing down ahead of me. It is nice though, especially because everyone else can’t seem to pick one speed and stick to it.
Drivers have always had enough leash to get into accidents while adjusting the radio. Nothing new under the sun as far as I am concerned. Find me the data that shows that semi-autonomous vehicles get into more accidents than non-autonomous vehicles per mile.
You are still ignoring the fact that people get into plenty of accidents without autonomous technology. People + Autonomous tech is overall safer than without. I see people messing around on their cell phones every single day while they drive regular non autonomous cars.
Would you not argue that Tesla’s autopilot does just that? Honestly if we are arguing that all it needs to do is keep the car going on a set course, lots of cars have autopilot...
“Enhanced Autopilot adds these new capabilities to the Tesla Autopilot driving experience. Your Tesla will match speed to traffic conditions, keep within a lane, automatically change lanes without requiring driver input, transition from one freeway to another, exit the freeway when your destination is near, self-park…
Does the car not drive itself?
Yes, and people get into collisions all the time all on their own. I am sure Elon Musk would love to have that data available to his cars so he could improve the systems even further.
That’s irrelevant. The point is, Autopilot flies planes the same way that Tesla’s Autopilot drives cars, with someone in the cockpit to monitor it.
Pilots are people, are they not? My point is that the term comes from aviation, and like autopilot aviation they system requires a person to monitor it to insure that it works as it should.
People still need licenses to drive which means they should have experience driving. People still make more mistakes than autopilot. A person driving plus autopilot should be safer than either one separately. If people choose to ignore the warnings/trick autopilot into thinking they are paying attention, then people…
So your argument is that people are the problem?
Planes have “autopilot” but pilots are still required to be awake and paying attention. I don’t see the issue with the name. It is in the best sense of the word and “autopilot” mode. It doesn’t mean it’s immune to making mistakes.
Driver Shift mode: Dynamic. Depends on if that Civic next to me really wants to get embarrassed and whether my kid is sleeping or not.
