I still think the word correctly represents what the system does. It allows the car to drive itself in a specific environment. It doesn’t do it perfectly so you have to pay attention while using it. Nothing Tesla has said has given any indication otherwise.

Yeah, I have a hard enough time letting adaptive cruise control work in my car. My brain is fighting my urge to tap the brakes when I see cars slowing down ahead of me. It is nice though, especially because everyone else can’t seem to pick one speed and stick to it.

Drivers have always had enough leash to get into accidents while adjusting the radio. Nothing new under the sun as far as I am concerned. Find me the data that shows that semi-autonomous vehicles get into more accidents than non-autonomous vehicles per mile.

You are still ignoring the fact that people get into plenty of accidents without autonomous technology. People + Autonomous tech is overall safer than without. I see people messing around on their cell phones every single day while they drive regular non autonomous cars.

Yes, and people get into collisions all the time all on their own. I am sure Elon Musk would love to have that data available to his cars so he could improve the systems even further.

That’s irrelevant. The point is, Autopilot flies planes the same way that Tesla’s Autopilot drives cars, with someone in the cockpit to monitor it.

Pilots are people, are they not? My point is that the term comes from aviation, and like autopilot aviation they system requires a person to monitor it to insure that it works as it should.

People still need licenses to drive which means they should have experience driving. People still make more mistakes than autopilot. Planes have “autopilot” but pilots are still required to be awake and paying attention. I don’t see the issue with the name. It is in the best sense of the word and “autopilot” mode. It doesn’t mean it’s immune to making mistakes.

Driver Shift mode: Dynamic. Depends on if that Civic next to me really wants to get embarrassed and whether my kid is sleeping or not.
