I just read a story about a Canadian man whose Japanese wife walked out with their kid, and he hasn’t seen him in three years. There is basically no legal protection for foreign parents.

Sounds similar to what we have in Canada. EI (unemployment benefits) at 55% of your salary, up to a certain amount. There's 16 weeks for the birth mother and I think 36 weeks for either parent, or adoptive parents.
