I think it looked best when it was that weird brownish color they had with the matching panels. It looked, dare I say, “sporty.”

I don’t know if it really counts as embarrassing and I’ve bought them anyway since I like them but I’m a big fan of mk4 (generally 99.5-05) VWs. I love that generation Jetta (and I still lust after a mk2) for some reason and have bought a couple. I’ve fallen in love with the 2.0 that I have and while it may not be…
Same!!! Mk6 GTI? It makes a huge difference. Only thing that bothers me about mine is that the tips weren’t “deep” enough so they seem to almost mushroom out and it kind of annoys me. No one else has really noticed but I can’t help but want something different.
What kind of car do you have? Plenty of mk4 VW Golfs and Jettas had a similar issue and the problem ended up being solder points, mostly. I just figured I could point you to a dedicated DIY for that if you ended up having one :)
I know I’ve said this before but you have been my favorite addition to the Jalopnik crew! I always thoroughly enjoy your articles and how meticulous you are with each and every process. Your work has been a joy to read and I seriously commend you on your abilities!! Also, thanks for keeping your cars clean. I’m not a…
That’s actually really neat engineering! I bust on Chrysler in general for a lot but I’ve got to give them props for thinking of the little details like that.
Just trying to understand: what do you mean by lack of support? One thing I always loved as a GTI owner is that the Golf and Jetta were basically the same cars but one just happened to have a big booty. I know that was infinitely more true in the mk4 generation than it is today but in general a lot of the performance…
This is a really cool idea!
It’s hard to find a good picture of a stock one so this will do. I know it’s only a lowly Jetta BUT when you consider the fact that this could easily be a 99.5 model built in 1998, I think it puts in perspective just how well these have aged:
You’re wonderful. I just want you to know. Jalopnik can be a weird (yet lovely) place but I’m glad they signed you on! I wasn’t sure what to think at first (I’m really into car detailing and usually “cleaning” articles revolve around bad suggestions on how to wash cars so I was skeptical) but I love your personality…
Never thought about this. Good point. I figure it would lock it out though, no? At least at low speeds, you would think it would switch to Neutral first...
Thank you for pointing this out. People always forget stuff like this and think shocks last forever just because the engine will...
This is the right answer, I think. The new TSI engines have been delightful, if you ask me (I am either closely related/directly own 4 relatively new ones, a 2011 2.0T, a 2012 2.0T, a 2015 1.8T, and a 2016 1.8T). The 1.8's have had absolutely no issues and have been great on fuel economy on the highway if you baby…
L.O.L. We are of Hispanic descent and my parents have what are considered to be relatively thick accents at times. Siri never gets anything right and it’s kind of funny to see what it thinks is being asked... Sorry to hear of your troubles!
Not gonna lie, that’s pretty sweet. I dig it and I usually hate car proposals.
I feel like I get more paranoid with every passing day so you’re not alone. I guess we’ll see someday (or not, more likely, I suppose).
Same :/ didn’t even think about all of this...
Question about the bushings. You mentioned they’re trivial to replace. How easy are we talking? I think that’s the noise I’m getting in my GTI with around 125k miles on it... not really sure what to do to change it though...
That’s a really good thought about the replacement door. I am also thinking 90's but it just reminds me of a Panther platform car. Something like a Cougar or a Thunderbird.
I agree with your assessment of an older American car. I really feel like it’s an early 90's Mercury Cougar though.
