I wouldn't be surprised if they were just as efficient as typical solar panels in that alignment. A big setback of PV efficiency is the law of thermodynamics. Solar panels are more efficient at lower temperatures. Being translucent, heat would significantly be less.

You would be lucky to get a 5w panel (realistically a 1w panel) to stick on the back of a GS3. It would add considerable bulk width wise). It isnt financially viable (a 5w panel twice the size of the GS3 is about $30). You wont recover the cost over two years.

I think the HTC EVO 4g LTE blows the GS3 out of the water. That was my deciding factor. I would like to see a match up between the Evo and iPhone 5.
