@Maave: You can even improve UI consistency some when running mixed environments. Both Qt and Gtk have themes that import colours from the other, so if you primarily use KDE you can have Gtk apps inherit your KDE colours, or vice-versa if you use GNOME.

@sisina: One great thing about Linux for web development is you can set up your system to mirror how your webhost is set up. Develop and test locally instead of having to upload and waste bandwidth.

@Whitson Gordon: It's a KDE thing and not appropriate to the article, but I think Kopete's the best Linux IM client, overall. The contact list is extremely flexible and can be as large or small, as minimal or gaudy, as you want it to be.

@Luke Faraone: Good to know. It probably won't get edited in the article so hopefully promoting the comment will get it noticed.

@cmgaviao: GNOME has graphical equivalents of the console `su` and `sudo` commands. They work the same way but ask for your password in a popup. It's how running Synaptic via the Administration menu works, for example.

I'm pretty sure this has been known by developers for a long time, and other comments seem to confirm this. You get more possible bindings with a keyboard and much more accurate control with a mouse.

Kids are putting on some headphones, lying down and cranking some really monotonous music and that's supposed to be the internet-era drug we should worry about?

A stylus? Good! Maybe that means it will be pressure sensitive. It will definitely be more precise and cause fewer fingerprints.

@sweenish: Completely agreed. Bose has pretty good sound quality, but with headphones you get really shoddy build quality for what you pay. I had a pair a few years ago that I had to replace constantly: four separate sets in a bit over three years.

@Marand: Weird, lifehacker mangled the URL. That doesn't usually happen.

@Shane Rounce: Thanks, that told me what I wanted to know. 16:9 looks weird to me no matter how it's rotated, but putting it in portrait really makes it stand out. My notebook's at the same ratio and it seems so strange when I use it, too. It gives me a nice full-sized keyboard + numpad, though. :D

@Shane Rounce: I'm curious, what are you using for the portrait-oriented display? The aspect ratio looks really odd to me for some reason.

If you don't have your own SCUMM games and don't want to pirate, you can still get a few games legally. Check the "Extra" section of the Downloads page ( [scummvm.org] href="http://lifehacker.com/tag/extras/">#extras ).

@TheFu: For viewing, I only use `cat` if I know it's a short file. Otherwise I use `less`. I used to use `more` but I started preferring `less` for its searching and scrolling. Interaction is familiar because of manpages, so it's natural and good for searching and skimming. `more` handles things like ANSI colour

@TheFu: Nothing arcane or sneaky. Consistency, mostly, and a bit of habit.

@ArmoredCavalry: Hey it worked for Microsoft. After Vista, "only a little worse" was a step up. ;)

@TheOtherHalf: Seems to happen mostly with people that want to show how awesome they are.

@xd.Balls: Don't tell me about how many smart PhD's you have on your team, if you built a faulty product.
