Just a guess, but is it due to several other languages all using the Roman alphabet, so it’s more of an international romanized spelling than anglicized spelling? Vowel pronunciations in American English tend to differ from what seems to be more standard in other languages that use the Roman alphabet. Just a thought…

Exactly. Are the headlights somehow too much light at dusk or even daylight? I remember my dad asking me to electrically disable his DRLs because he did not like driving during the day with his headlights on.
