I know you’re being facetious but the death penalty costs even more than keeping them in jail for life. The appeals process takes years and years and costs a ton of taxpayer dollars. More evidence that restorative justice is better for individuals, better for tax payers, and better for society.

Actually, it costs us here in NY about $25,000 per year per inmate to keep in prison. Now, the reincarceration rate is about 40% right now, but it’s about half of that for folks who receive education in prison (don’t worry, it’s not costing precious tax payer money, it’s all from philanthropy).

And yet statistics show that punitive systems like ours have an insanely high reincarceration rate compared to restorative/rehabilitative justice systems, and our system is more expensive to boot.
