Actually, early NA 5 speeds were a bit different. Reverse lockout and improved internals in the NB 5 speed transmission. The NB 5 speed bolts right into the NA however and is a nice upgrade after the stock gearbox gets to around 200k.

This is true, but if you aren’t looking for big power increases, the 5 speed is just a sweeter gearbox IMHO.
Came here to say this. Most of us early Miata owners prefer the 5 speed to the six.
Wrangler doesn’t really have anything that competes against it for what it is. Currently, it really stands alone.
