I just want one edition back, in mint condition. It’sfrom, iirc, the early ‘80s (so past the golden age, but I believe O’Rourke was the editor-in-chief, so not sucking yet), with a theme I’ve forgotten. It had, however, an insert of mass murderer trading cards, the “stats” on the backs of the cards with illustrated…
Also, the dog was adorable and so well behaved I didn’t think it was real for the longest time. Most be an old pro of a dog actor!
‘Tis sad I have but one star to give; you echo my feelings. I would also like to mention how well the cast and Ferrell seemed to gel from moment one. I wrote my thoughts in a thread above but it is clear he came with his own ideas, while opting in wonderfully with some recurring spots. For someone who hasn’t…
Dennis, I usually agree with your reviews, but I feel like this season has rendered you considerably numb. This was the best episode of SNL in quite a while, if I may be so bold! It was just watching Ferrell’s energy get channeled into new and interesting premises (for the most part) instead of being the Wiig-esque…
Even if I accepted that there was a “Deep State conspiracy” against Trump, the idea that Hannity possesses the intellect and work ethic to uncover it is about as childish as thinking that Larry the Cable Guy will single handedly destroy ISIS. Goodness, are the rightwing “deplorables” that stupid?
...and as a comedy at that.
Yeah, that’s how I’m aware of it as well and I believe it was labelled as having been cut after the dress rehearsal. The NBC website also labels it as “Cut for Time” so I think William just got that wrong.
America has this big “You think you’re better than me?” chip on its shoulder. Then it elects dumb rich kids (e.g., Bush W., Trump, etc.) to run the country because these dumb rich kids are somehow, “self-made men.” We are a fucking stupid country sometimes. We’d rather be treated like serfs by corporate demigods than…
But Sloth LOVE AMERICA!
I think Denzel got the nomination for this role (in a rather poor movie) because he played a character who is really, really unlikable.
Yes, he’s on the spectrum (and they certainly played that up), but I haven’t loathed a character Denzel played in a movie this such since Training Day (which got him an Oscar).
Hell,…
Katie Rife, I appreciate your opinion on Del Toro! I’ve always thought he got a little too much credit for his visual panache to no end than what his movies do with it—not that I begrudge the nominations as it does push their boundaries a bit.
Denis Villeneuve was snubbed for Best Director.
The Florida Project not earning a Best Picture nomination strikes me as the biggest snub of the year, especially considering that the list didn’t even hit 10.
Dafne Keen was like a special effect. James Mangold hit the lottery with her casting.
Has there ever been an award that he’s been nominated for where he didn’t clearly deserve the nomination?
She was terrific in The Post. Even people who don’t care for her have said it’s one of her best performances in ages.
Agreed. Also the Post being nominated. I would’ve loved to see Blade Runner up for Best picture.
You’re behind. The “actually Three Billboards is terrible” thinkpieces started weeks ago.
Meryl Streep is a great actress but this “gets nominated just for showing up” thing she’s got going every year is a bit ridiculous
