The topic of Bates' forgery skills is a major plot point in the Christmas Special. Not to give anything away, but I think his expertise goes further back than the most recent prison stint. One doesn't become that much of an expert in that short an amount of time.

All signs point to yes. Especially when you factor in his ham-handed, "Oh crap! I forgot there's a big vat of rat poison in the house!"

Bear in mind, Bates also took a day trip the day before we learned of Vera's death, another person who he saw as an obstacle to his happiness with Anna. Of course, he returned with scratches on his face from that little journey.
