We just happened to be passing through that area when they Geisha and Maiko were heading to work. There was practically no one else there, and what few of us were quickly moved out of the way, gave a tiny bow when they passed, and stayed quiet. It was an incredible experience, like a waking dream.

kids in extracurriculars at public schools in the US are often asked to sell foodstuffs, magazine subscriptions, coupon books etc. to raise money, and it’s quite common for parents to help their kids out by ~~asking their colleagues to buy stuff~~ Taking all their crap to work and selling it for them.

Something like 15 years ago, I was in Omaha and they had this exact problem. Everyone excelled and moved away, and there were no people to fill positions at fast food places. So you’d see their signs advertising “$18/hour with a $1,000 signing bonus”. It was crazy.
