One of my favorite things about living in DC was the classic movie series they had at Library of Congress every once in a while—-and the National Gallery too. Free! That and the AFI Silver Spring—if you felt like paying for your classic movies and eating popcorn :)

It’s the Quaker slant to their educational curriculum, I think. Everyone I’ve known who came out of friends schools has a similar ‘regular person’ quality. And Friends schools do a lot of community service type of things from the youngest grades.

In the 20s and 30s, especially during the period of Harlem Renaissance tourism to see black acts, white performers did indeed steal work from black performers knowing full well that they would be able to bring it to a national audience that was completely not available to that black artist.
