The music reminds me very much of the first part of this, slowed way down and slightly filtered. My mind jumped to it the as soon as I hit play for some reason.

Because it's success is based entirely on the Madden name and not the ability of it to, ya know, simulate football. If this guy is right, EVERY EA football game (and hockey, apparently) use his basic algorithms to pick and run plays before it's ever drawn on the screen.

Ah. But regardless of how "rewritten from scratch" it is, it could still be a derivative work. This all relies on the basic algorithm it uses to simulate plays (before the graphics are applied, 2d, 3d, etc), as well as the "ask madden"/AI pick a play feature. If it all relates back to the original work - however…
