the av club seems to favor anything super hero related and be much less judgmental of the quality compared to anything else they review.

Thor reverses the Hero's journey. You just explained it. It's an incredibly annoying, empty and shrill rehash of the hero's journey that fools people into thinking its fresh.

I could sense you favor the marvel films over something new, fresh and risk taking like Girl's Trip. I like to feel the same emotions you described.
Girl's trip was also very, very entertaining and made the two hours feel like 30 minutes. I can't put into words how let down I was by Valerian considering how much I adore and respect Luc Besson.
