I’ve read them. And the L Sprague de Camp books. I’m sorry but I find his characterization in the written stuff to be too much Awesomeguy McPerfect. He's the biggest and the toughest and the smartest and YAWN. The movie Conan has flaws I can get behind. I don't know what you want from the Howard stories that you

funny story: my stepdad was never much of a tv viewer but there was a tv in his den & he would sometimes put it on when he was doing paperwork. one evening at dinner, he started telling us about a movie he had gotten drawn into that afternoon - it eventually became apparent it was “conan the barbarian.” i asked him

I say this as someone who loves the film, but that’s the idea of propaganda filmmaking, isn’t it? Conan’s okay to non-fascist audiences because it’s set in a “might makes right” ancient world, Conan is sympathetically drawn, and his enemies are monstrous. But it’s not for nothing that fascist regimes frequently invoke

Sooooo....in the summer of 2010 I was heading up the Digital Media Archives at NBC-Uni, with a 4-person office that doubled as an MPAA vault in the center of a floor of engineers who neither understood nor cared what we digital media guys were up to. And it was great! I had my own golf cart on the lot, and the drive

Wait, but have you considered how hilarious a squirrel beam would be? What if it were like a cascade of squirrels lined up nose to tail?

It sounds like the person Critifur is talking about is the company owner, which indeed makes it a situation he probably can’t resolve. And there are many situations where “HR exists to protect the company” translates in an abusive way even if the abuser ISN’T the owner/CEO.

Disagree - Stephen is the personality Marc created to shield him from the trauma that was being done to him; Jake is the personality he unknowingly created to shield him from the most traumatic things that he himself was doing.  I think it’s very interesting indeed.

Also gotta note that not every actor has good chemistry with THEMSELVES. (Not everyone can be Tatiana Maslany.) So major shoutout to Oscar Isaac for making the best relationship in the show be between Marc and Steven.

Can I bring the mood down a sec? As someone who was abused as a child by his mother, (I know, I know. I’m OK now) this shit was downright cathartic. Tears and everything.

Someone told me there were references to “What If” and I was like, “Shit, I have to finish that before I see this movie.”

This deserves the full PJ O’Rourke quote.

it FEELS like homework, though. what is the mcu even about anymore? like what are we, as an audience, building towards?

The two best Coach exchanges:

an armorer who took on too much responsibility by also being a prop director

I think it’s the result of declining star power generally. It seems like viewers are far less likely to see a movie simply because a famous person they like is in it. Robbie herself has struggled to turn herself into a true box office draw, despite the fact that she’s an appealing screen presence and is frequently

Yeah, but 76% are made of Hemsworths, Gyllenhaals, and Skarsgards.

history is often boring.

Hit-Monkey outranks them all, because it’s about a Hit-Monkey. Real simple.

9th is too high.

Looking back at AoS, it seems to me like an encyclopaedia of bad creative decisions. The SHIELD of the show never seemed like the same organization we’d glimpsed in the movies. In fact, the Whedon Scooby Gang (TM) we followed for six seasons seemed to exist entirely in their own, rather underfunded TV universe.
