Noclip put together a fantastic documentary about the release of XIV 1.0 to A Ream Reborn, and it features significant interviews with Michael Christopher Koji Fox (as well as Yoshida, and even SE’s CFO!)

It’s one of the greatest examples of a turnaround in game quality post release I can think of, if not ever.

In response to the usual “Oh a failing Kickstarter, imagine my surprise!” comments, I’d like to note the following from the announcement (emphasis mine):

Shovel Knight is one of the biggest, but it also suffered delays before release.

It’s not great surprise, it was going towards the end since shogun assassination and farewell shinsengumi arcs. Sad to see one of my favorite series going away, but also it’s better to end it while it’s good instead of going Bleach way.

Well, they’re modeling the same strategy as the Behemoth encounter in FFXIV, but yeah I do agree they probably shouldn’t be the norm.

I feel like Studio Ghibli has always occupied a stranger position in anime fandom. The most vocal gatekeepers often reject or downplay Ghibli films because they straddle the social boundary between the anime subculture and the global art cinema.
