My dad’s 6’4” and he’s always had the habit of standing one foot on the bathroom counter while he shaves. It would be a funny sight, if only he didn’t do it buck naked.
Husband is 6’ 5”, I’m 5’ 10”, and if we ever win the lottery we will build a house that accommodates us; high ceilings & doors, a bedroom large enough to accommodate a California King bed, an extra-long bathtub, etc. I watch shows like “Tiny House Hunters” and cringe.
Yep! 5’2” woman here. Desks & countertops all give me a sore back. Since I’m in the sciences and frequently work at those 60s or 70s era black soapstone lab benches, I’m painfully aware of how much taller I would need to be (some idealized man’s height, I’m sure) for that to ever be a comfortable process.
Same! 5’10 and doing the dishes for more than 4 minutes hurts my back so badly. My 5’7 mother cheerfully does them and now that makes sense!
My mother always thought I was just being lazy and trying to get out of chores when I complained that working on our kitchen counter or sink gave me back pain. The kitchen was bought when one could still get different sizes and was selected for her 5”3, I’m 5”8.
5’ 6” here. Everything has been pleasantly situated. I feel like an ass for not realizing.
I live in what was my 6ft tall grandmother’s house. All of my counters are 4” higher than standard, and I love them with an loving love, even though I’m only 5’8”. It doesn’t take THAT much to raise your counters - when we redid the kitchen, we built a simple 2x4 frame at the floor upon which to stack the cabinets. A…
Yep. My mother had the benefit that my father built their first home, and the kitchen was made for her height. The drawback is...she’s 5’3”. Until I moved out, I had to operate in that kitchen...and I’m 5’9”. My sister lives there now. She’s 5’7’. She’s learned to deal with it.
I’ve wondered that too. My grandfather’s kitchen was built for my grandmother who was 5’1. She died quite young and the rest of us suffered for years hunched over that sink, washing dishes after holidays. It wasn’t obvious how much lower it was all set until you stood at the sink for awhile. So it might even go…
I'm 5'5" and I still have to clamber onto the counter to get things from the top shelf of our cabinet. While I dearly love my husband's industriousness in building and installing various hooks and shelves throughout out house, the fact that he's 6' means that everything ends up being just out of reach. He also knows…
So does my 5’1” sister-in-law. She’s like a kitchen ninja hopping onto her counters and stove.
Very much so! 6’0” here and in pain if I have to wash many dishes by hand or work consistently on a regular counter. One day, when I have my own home and can refurbish a kitchen, I will fit it to work with our tall family (hubby is also 6’0”+). It is pricy, but not to the point that it won’t make up for avoiding all…
My mother and I are both 6’ tall and when she had her kitchen remodeled she just said “fuck it, I’m raising the counters.” Then again, she intends to die in that home.
Mr. diFranco & I are currently house shopping, and looking at lots of older fixer-uppers. The idea that some of the things we’ve seen in older kitchens was designed for any human, of any height or average movement pattern, is hilarious to me at this point. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen at least 2 that were put together by…
I feel ya. 6 feet tall and doing dishes at my mom’s is torture. Her house was built in 1898 for a very petite lady.
The Former Mr. McFly’s mother was less than 5’. She had her kitchen specifically designed for her, cabinets were shorter, counters were narrower, etc. Other than making me feel like Godzilla (I’m a perfectly respectable 5’6”) and costing a small fortune, it really worked for her and everyone else got over it. It…
when my husband and i renovated our kitchen, we moved everything - EVERYTHING - up 4” so that it would be more comfortable to cook and clean in there. he built the cabinets and counter-tops so they were a wee bit taller, and covered the gap between the cabinets and the floor with a wider kick-board. the range is on…
Psshhh I am 4’11. I STILL climb on counters and even then stuff is still out of my reach. As the person who does the majority of the cooking and can’t get the spices when I need them I hate it so very much. Also when you have a full time job and your body hates you the last thing on your mind is climbing and jumping…
As a 5”7 woman I have clearly been wandering through life blind to my kitchen privilege. Although I did end up washing a lot of dishes at a retreat centre with a sink that was three or four inches lower than standard - I came out with a sore back and a conviction that the designer was clearly a nutter. Is this how…
