Why would you assume that I was talking about sensor size instead of body? "They are" denotes a general characteristic of the camera. If I'd wanted to address sensor size, I would have said "They also HAVE a significantly smaller sensor". Which of course is not generally true.

Oops. Didn't read the "compact" part, I guess. Usually people are asking for differences between DSLRs and m4/3s.

The primary difference is that they're mirrorless. Traditional DSLRs utilize mirrors to give the viewfinder an actual view of what the lens is seeing. Micro 4/3ds swap these mirrors out for a digital viewfinder. They are also significantly smaller than DSLRs.
