Except that Cardinals become Cardinals when they are "elevated" (i.e. appointed) by a Pope. So, technically, the pope has great influence in selecting his successor, or at least influencing the doctrinal make-up of the college of cardinals.

Totally thought of Neko when I read this headline. She's about as close as I get to "country" music.
Ugh. She looks exactly like the Rapunzel character in Tangled (can't remember the name). Whhyyyyy do all the characters have to have the same generic look: huge eyes, tiny nose, pointy chin? Diversity people, it's a good thing.
People think it's a "bigger issue" that TSwift doesn't ID as a feminist because she's a successful young woman who claims to have gained her success on her own terms and creating her own image. She's benefited from feminism yet doesn't seem to realize it. An even BIGGER issue is that she is an idol to legions of…
good lord, woman, get out of my head.
Preach. Like you, I am a white woman (also named Lauren :P) and yes, sometimes I do have "privilege blinders" on. But I am willing to learn! That's why I read this site and others.
That's part of the problem - I've heard a few professors express this - young women think feminism isn't needed anymore. They can play sports, wear pants, take the same classes as the boys, and probably don't experience blatant sexism because it is less prevalent among young people - huzzah! victory!
I experienced this about a week ago in a during a Women's Law Forum round table discussion following a screening of Miss Representation. One of the professors asked the group "who identifies as a feminist?" About 2/3 of attendees raised their hands. A few asked if they could define themselves as "humanists"…
Upon further reflection, I think what bothered me what not so much the "openness" of the conversation (on their part), but that I didn't know how to gracefully cut off the encounter (or even if I could). One time, I was in Sears trying to buy a vacuum cleaner while the cashier was playing 20 questions with me. …
I'm from NJ, so when I moved to NC and experienced this very thing, it kinda drove me up a wall (especially that one time I was just trying to buy a damn vacuum cleaner and leave the store). I'm a very private person in general, so the conversations tended to be very one-sided. I just didn't (and still don't)…
Don't cry! I volunteer to give your shoe collection a good home.
Haha thanks! Like you, my pair were a gift from my significant other. Yours sound lovely (I just got the classic black). The real tragedy is I don't have enough occasions to wear them.
Louboutins still fit
Preach.
Completely agree. I guess the problem is that a lot of young women see it as a "human" problem, instead of a "feminist" problem. There is also the problem of women color not feeling welcome or adequately represented by the feminist movement.
You sound just like my male prof. He said pretty much the same thing: young women think the "feminist movement" (as they interpret it) is no longer needed. Then they get out into the "real world," see what we all have to deal with, and are completely taken aback. He seemed to think that by that point, they think…
I'm going to go ahead and answer myself first: Feminist issues are issues concerned with the treatment, rights, and interests of women. The entire point of the documentary was to show the objectification of women in the media. That is a feminist issue. It concerns everyone because everyone is a consumer of media…
So. I need some jezzie input.
I think, like you said, it's that no one knows about the designer collaborations. I saw one commercial, once, about the Pearl by Georgina Chapman line at JCP. I was blown away. They really need to work on their marketing.
I love the idea of epidurals...minus the gigantic-needle-in-the-spine part. I passed out during an HPV shot. Almost passed out having blood drawn, and that was in the comfort of my own bed with a pillow over my face (my parents are medical technologists so they've been drawing blood for 30-odd years). I don't do…
