8 or 9 are the most accessible for people not already accustom with the ways of dragon quest. (i would recommend 9 over 8, but that is just because i wasn't a big fan of 8 when it came out.). you can get 8 for the ps2 and 9 for the DS.

i like both. However, That MMO genre is weird. Log Horizon is totally about living in an mmo world. SAO is about Virtual Reality vs What is Reality using "MMO's" to tell that story. so i never really see it as apart of the mmo anime genre which only includes: SAO, Log Horizon, and DotHack? given how my family transitioned through the console generations (nes -> genesis -> ps1), i never got to play shining force 3. Then sometime after that the Shining series changed completely and not long after that we stopped getting any of the games over here in the US completely.

When it comes to SRPG's i always recommend Shining Force 2 for the SEGA Genesis. (which is available on Steam and PS3/X360 (sega classic collection)) The story keeps you engaged and doesn't feel like it is going on forever.
